Attack on president's palace in Mogadishu, Somalia

The al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabab attacked the heavily fortified presidential palace compound in Mogadishu. The gates were forced open by a car bomb and 14 people were killed in a fierce gun battle with palace guards. The president was not harmed.

Due to lack of personal security and unpredictable armed conflict, all travel to Somalia should be avoided.
