Domestic Terrorism and Violence

The threat of domestic terrorism in the northern states is high, where an extremist group known as Boko Harim is based and often claims responsibility for attacks. Incidents of terrorist attacks have resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries. Often the attacks involve improvised explosive devices (IED) and gun fire.

A state of emergency is in effect in some areas of Borno and Yobe states. Curfews are also in effect for the Damaturu metropolis and the state of Kaduna. You should avoid all travel within and around these areas. There are also frequent episodes of violent attacks in the city of Jos, located in the Plateau State, which maintains a state of emergency.

Attacks have also occurred in Adamawa state, where 50 students were killed, and several drinking establishments were targeted in Bauchi, Taraba, and Kaduna. Churches have also been victim to attacks in Bauchi, Kaduna, and Kogi.

There is a serious risk of foreign nationals being kidnapped throughout the country.
