1st case of H7N9 bird flu found in Hong Kong

Hong Kong health authorities have reported the 1st case of H7N9 bird flu in Hong Kong. The patient was in Shenzhen last month and hadbeen in contact with poultry there. Last spring this virus spread from Shanghai to four provinces in mainland China (Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Henan) in a shortperiod of time. About half the people who were infected died from thishighly lethal virus, and health authorities had to close the live chickenmarkets in order to stop the spread of the virus.

Although there was little person-to-person spread of this virus, there are concerns that it could mutate and create a major global epidemic with considerable loss of life. Travellers should continue to avoid visiting the live poultry markets in China and practice good flu prevention, i.e. wash hands frequently.
