1st outbreak of dengue fever in Mombasa, Kenya, since 1982

There are reports that up to 83 cases of dengue fever have been diagnosed in Mombasa in what is the the 1st identified dengue outbreak in this city since 1982. No deaths have been reported. Mombasa is a major metropolitan city (2nd largest city in Kenya) along the coast in Kenya and a major shipping port and international/local tourist destination. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
