20 percent increase in dengue fever cases in Zulia State, Venezuela

Health authorities in Zulia have reported 348 cases of dengue fever during the first 3 weeks of this year. Of these, 20 have a more serious form of the infection. The total number represents a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year. There may be many more cases in the community than are reported due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities,. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
