2nd hand, foot & mouth disease caused by EV71 reported in Philippines

Of the 43 suspected hand, foot and mouth disease cases reported in the Philippines, 21 have been confirmed by laboratory testing. However, only 2 of these have been caused by enterovirus-71 (EV-71) which is a more serious cause of this disease. EV-17 infections in Cambodia caused a significant number of deaths in children.

Travellers who are travelling with small children who are most susceptible to infection with this virus can decrease the risk of exposure to hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) virus by frequent hand washing and maintaining careful personal hygiene.
