2nd human case of plague in New Mexico, US

New Mexico has reported its second human case of plague in 2016. The two counties which have reported cases are Rio Arriba and Bernalillo.

Advice For Travellers

While the risk of exposure for the general traveller is very low, the risk can be higher for campers and hikers that may come in contact with wild rodents that carry plague. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to plague by taking all necessary measures to avoid flea bites in areas where plague commonly occurs.
