3 countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria) continue to report cases of polio

Polio cases continue to be reported from Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern Nigeria. In all 3 countries, Islamic extremists have obstructed health workers from implementing vaccination campaigns. However, the Afghan Taliban changed their policy to allow vaccination in recent years so that there has been a decline in cases in Afghanistan. Sporadic cases may occur from time to time in Central Africa and in the Horn of Africa.

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
