3 more cities in Ceará, Brazil, reach epidemic leves of dengue fever

In the past week, 3 more cities have reported epidemic levels of dengue fever, bringing the total number o municipalities with high levels of dengue to 20. The municipalities are Alcântaras, Aquiraz, Arneiroz, Barbalha, Catarina, Coreaú, Eusébio, Hidrolândia, Horizonte, Ipu, Jardim, Jucás, Mucambo, Ocara, Piquet Carneiro, Pires Ferreira, Porteiras, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Trairi and Varjota.

Across the state, there have been almost 10,000 reported cases.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
