3 Provinces in Panama report sporadic cases of hantavirus infection

Two new cases of hantavirus have been reported in Los Santos Province (total of 11 cases this year). In addition, 1 new case occurred in Cocle Province. Herrera Province has also reported cases (4 cases). This region often reports occasional infections with this virus.

Dust, food, and hands that are contaminated with the dried urine and excreta of infected rodents are the main source of hanta viruses. When the dust is stirred up during cleaning or working in rodent-infested places, people inhale the virus and become infected. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to hantavirus infection by avoiding situations that create dust in rodent infected areas.
