6.8 magnitude earthquake damages central Myanmar

Preliminary reports after a significant earthquake (6.8 magnitude) hit near the city of Mandalay include at least 6 deaths, 15 people missing and many damaged buildings and pagodas. An unfinished bridge fell into the Irrawaddy River. Two deaths and 20 injured were reported from nearby Kyauk Myaung.

Until the extent of the damage is documented, travellers may wish to avoid travelling in the affected area since essential services, including transportation, may be severely disrupted.
