84 children die from encephalitis (brain inflammation) in Bihar, India

Health authorities report that a total of 84 children have died from encphalitis in Gaya in the last 2 1/2 months. A total of 384 children were admitted to local hospitals with symptoms of encephalitis. While the reports do not specify the exact cause of the encephalitis, the outbreak may be due to a mixture of infections caused by Japanese encephalitis virus and perhaps other enteroviruses.

Travellers to this area should exercise caution and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and unsafe food and water. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis virus should be considered.
