Acute fevers in Paraguay

Health authorities have reported that many patients with sudden fevers are examined daily in health centres. For example, in the Chaco Department, more than 120 people with fevers are treated every week. In the first 3 weeks of October, 364 people had sudden fevers in the metropolitan area of Asunción, and the departments of Boquerón and Canindeyú.

Due to lack of laboratory testing capacity, most of the people with febrile illness are not tested. Their illness could be due to dengue, chikungunya, Zika or yellow fever, all of which are transmitted by mosquitoes in this country.

Advice

The viruses that cause dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever are all found in Paraguay to one degree or another. For the general traveller, the risk of exposure to any one of these serious infectious diseases will vary from place to place. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended 10 days prior to travelling.
