After shocks disrupt services in Christ Church, New Zealand

Powerful aftershocks 4 months after the major 6.3 earthquake that killed 181 people have destroyed a building and disrupted essential services. Six people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

There is no power or water at Burwood, and no water at Hillmorton. Some water leakage is occurring at Princess Margaret Hospital. In some parts of the city, sewage pipes have broken and untreated sewage may have contaminated water supplies. Residents are being advised to boil their water before drinking it.

Travellers to this area should be aware that essential services have been temporarily disrupted and that only critical emergency care is being offered at area hospitals.
