Air traffic banned over Iceland due to potential volcano eruption

A “red alert” is in place and air traffic has been banned over Iceland due to a small eruption detected yesterday at the Bardarbunga volcano. Authorities state that it is not clear when or if a major eruption could take place. The red alert is the highest level of warning indicating the possibility of an eruption that could cause “significant emission of ash into the atmosphere.”

Airports currently remain open. The region is about 300 kilometers from Reykjavik, the capital. A national park that is popular with tourists is within the area.
