An outbreak of a form of leishmaniasis in Neiva, Colombia draws international attention

Authorities from the World Health Organization's Regional Office for the Americas are assisting in investigating a small outbreak of visceral leishmaniasis (a form of the disease that affects internal organs) in Neiva, in Huila Department. Seven children were identified in this outbreak. No fatalities have been reported.

Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to leishmaniasis by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites.
