Another death due to encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India

The total number of deaths in 2012 due to encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh has increased to 588. Although the specific cause of the encephalitis (brain inflammation) is not reported, it is believed that viruses (enteroviruses) that are transmitted through contaminated water may be responsible for up to 95% of the cases. Some of the cases, however, may be due to Japanese encephalitis. Travellers to this area can reduce their risk of exposure to Japanese encephalitis virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is recommended. In addition, to avoid the risk of enterovirus caused encephalitis, strict water and food precautions should be followed.
