Anti-rape demonstrations continue in India

In spite of government reassurances that sex crimes will receive immediate attention, police have continued to block off key government districts in New Delhi in an effort to stop protesters angered about the gang rape of a woman on a public bus. The security barriers remain in place throughout the Raisina Hills area, that is home to the presidential mansion, the parliament building and federal ministerial blocks. However, protests were held in other areas of the city at the Jantar Mantar observatory, a regular protest site, some distance from the restricted area in New Delhi. One policeman involved in earlier protests died in hospital. Travellers should exercise caution and avoid all public and political demonstrations since they may become violent without notice.
