Anticipated protests in Turkey become violent

Turkish police used tear-gas and water cannon in the capital Ankara and other cities to disperse protesters who were attempting to to mark the first anniversary of mass anti-government demonstrations. Roads were closed and public transport was stopped to block access to Istanbul's Taksim Square and adjoining Gezi Park. Travellers should avoid all public and political gatherings since they may become violent without notice.
