Areas of Bulgaria under state of emergency due to snowfall

Bulgaria has declared a state of emergency due to snow in the municipalities of Smolyan, Kardzhali, Galabovo, Batak, Mineralni Bani and Yakoruda. The snowfall has downed trees, cut power to about 800 villages and has brought a high risk of avalanche. Telecommunications are disrupted, and some roads are blocked. The road from Elhovo to Trankovo has been closed. More snow is forecast for the southern Bulgarian mountains through March 11. Authorities are concerned about the risk of serious flooding in these areas when the show melts.

Areas most affected are: Smolyan, Kurdzhali, Pazardzhik and Plovdiv regions, as well as Blagoevgrad, Gabrovo, Haskovo, Lovech, Montana, Sofia district, Stara Zagora, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin and Vratsa.
