Attack on military checkpoints in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula leaves at least 17 dead

At least 17 people were killed yesterday in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt near the Israel-Gaza border when the militant group, Velayat Sinai, attacked military checkpoints in the town of Sheikh Zuweid.

A state of emergency has been in place for the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula since October 2014, where Egyptian forces have been fighting militant groups. Some countries warn their citizens to avoid all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai due to criminal activity and terrorist attacks.
