Authorities label hepatitis A as an epidemic in Lebanon

Health authorities in Lebanon have noted a sharp rise in the number of hepatitis A cases over the past two years to the extent that there is now a current epidemic of this infection. In 2014, there were 2,500 recorded cases of hepatitis A, up from 1,000 cases in the year prior. Usually, there are only about 300 cases reported each year.

Hepatitis A can be prevented through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can reduce this risk by obtaining the vaccine prior to travelling and by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water.
