Big increase in number of reported cases of dengue fever in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Health authorities have reported a significant increase in reported cases of dengue fever in Rio de Janeiro. So far this year, a total of 6,565 cases have been reported.

Travellers to this city and other areas of Brazil where dengue fever cases are reported can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
