Big increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in Lawrence-Douglas County, Kansas, USA

Authorities in the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department have reported more than 80 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) so far this year. This total is five times the number reported last year. Travellers are reminded that outbreaks of highly contagious pertussis (whooping cough) can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including pertussis, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
