Blood shortages due to increase demand for treating malaria in Rwanda

The increase in demand for blood transfusions to treat rising cases of malaria is creating shortages of blood in hospitals, especially in high malaria areas such as the districts of Kirehe, Nyagatare, Bugesera and Nyanza. Patients with resistance to anti-malaria medications required longer treatment and more blood transfusions.

Advice For Travellers

In addition to the high risk of exposure to malaria, travellers may encounter difficulties if blood transfusions are needed for emergency surgery, injuries, etc. Any traveller to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
