Both dengue and chikungunya fever affecting Barranquilla, Colombia

There have been 2,591 reported cases of chikungunya and at least 200 cases of dengue fever reported in Barranquilla in the first 2 months of this year.

Both viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes, and both can cause serious illnesses. Travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with either disease may not seek medical care and not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both infections in the community that are not reported.
