Both dengue fever and chikungunya viruses are reported in Panama

So far this year, there have been slightly more than 1,000 reported cases of dengue fever. At present, the city and Province of Colon, as well as Bocas del Toro are reporting 1 to 10 new cases every day.

Only 155 cases of chikungunya have been reported, most of whom occurred during an outbreak in the town of Puerto Obaldía.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
