Brazil is having a bad year with dengue fever virus

With almost 900,000 cases of dengue fever nationwide, Brazil is experiencing extraordinary epidemics of this infection this year. More than three fourths of all the 5,570 cities in the entire country have reported at least 1 case of dengue fever. Of the ten cities with the highest rates of infection, eight are in the state of São Paulo. In the worst hit cities, between 10 and 20 percent of the population have been infected.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to all areas of Brazil where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
