California (USA) experiences major increases in whooping cough (pertussis)

So far this year, there have been almost 5,400 reported cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in California, more than double the 2,532 reported for all of 2013. Marin, Napa and Sonoma Counties have the highest rates for this infection. Yolo and San Diego counties are also recording major increases in cases.

Outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) can occur anywhere in the world at anytime. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations and their current immune status for pertussis are up-to-date prior to travelling.
