Campers and hikers are at risk of exposure to scrub typhus in dry season in Thailand

In 2011, health officials reported a total of 5,721 cases and 2 fatalities due to scrub typhus. Most of the cases were reported from Nan, Chiang Rai and Tak Province.

Travellers to these areas should be aware that the risk of exposure to scrub typhus is highest during the cooler weather season when camping and hiking travel is especially popular. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid chigger bites.
