Cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis increasing in Upper Dir, Pakistan

Recently, there has been a surge in reported cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (the skin form of the infection). Approximately 40-50 people have been seeking treatment every day for this infection in Upper Dir and other local districts.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis occurs often in Pakistan and especially in the eastern provinces bordering Afghanistan, such as Upper Dir, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province on the border with Afghanistan. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to leishmaniasis by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites.
