Chaos and lawlessness in Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil

In Espirito Santo state in Brazil, police have gone on strike. Local media reported crime rates
quadrupled over the weekend. From Vitoria, cellphone videos and media show looting, burning vehicles, rape, murder and dead bodies in the streets. Some reports state that “thugs” have run riot with machetes and guns, and some have been randomly shooting people on the street. As many as 50 people have been killed so far.

Avoid travel to Espirito Santo state until the situation has been resolved. The Brazilian government has sent in troops to try to restore order.
