Chikungunya causes deaths in Pernambuco State, Brazil

So far this year, there have been 31 deaths associated with chikungunya infections, including 2 fetuses in infected pregnant women. Approximately half of the deaths have occurred in Recife.

Advice For Travellers

The risk of death due to chikungunya infection is very low. In a large outbreak in Reunion Island, the risk was 1 per 1,000 infected people, but in India, there were no deaths among over a million cases. Nevertheless, chikungunya infection is not an innocuous disease. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
