Chikungunya continues to spread in Brazil

Although the total number of reported cases of chikungunya fever is not great nationwide (almost 9,000), the number of states reporting transmission of this virus keeps increasing. Affected states now include Amapá, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, and Minas Gerais.

Advice For Travellers

While the overall risk of exposure to this virus while travelling in Brazil is low, travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
