Chikungunya fever is spreading in French Guiana

The Agence Régionale de la Santé (ARS) in French Guiana has reported a sudden increase in reported cases of chikungunya fever. At present, there are 24 confirmed cases and an additional 2 suspected cases. Nine of the cases were infected while visiting Anguilla, but the remaining cases were infected locally, mostly in Kourou and Macouria.

Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
