Chikungunya fever is widespread in South America

Currently, reports of transmission of the chikungunya fever virus are being received from:

  • Bolivia – affected departments include Santa Cruz, Beni, Cochabamba, Tarija, Oruro
  • Colombia – widespread transmission continues; Narino is one of many affected departments.
  • Ecuador – increasing numbers of cases; affected provinces include Manabi, Esmeraldas, Guayas, Los Rios
  • Paraguay – active outbreaks are reported in Caaguazu and Coronel Oviedo in Alto Parana

Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
