Chikungunya fever virus begins to spread in Venezuela

The Minister of Health of Venezuela has confirmed that there are now 6 cases of chikungunya fever detected in Venezuela. The report does not specify where these cases were found. It is not surprising that the disease would spread to Venezuela since many people travel between Venezuela and the Caribbean where there is an extensive epidemic of this infection.

Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
