Chikungunya in El Salvador and Honduras

Among the many countries reporting cases of chikungunya fever, these two countries continue to report large numbers of cases nationwide in Central America.

In Honduras, the total number of cases has reached almost 50,000 people infected. The Hospital Escuela Universitario i treating approximately 60 patients daily while the children's Hospital Maternal Infantil is treating about 25 paediatric cases daily.

In El Salvador, the total number of cases has almost reached 25,000.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
