Chikungunya in South American countries

Cases and outbreaks of chikungunya fever continue to be reported by the following countries:

  • Colombia - 312,000 cases with 37 deaths
  • Ecuador - more than 30,000 suspected and confirmed cases with 2 deaths
  • Brazil - almost 9,000 suspected and confirmed cases
  • Paraguay - approximately 2,500 suspected and confirmed cases
  • Peru - Tumbes region reports approximately 130 case

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
