Chikungunya is widespread in South America

The following countries continue to report large numbers of cases of chikungunya fever:

  • Colombia - nationwide nearing 300,000 cases and 36 associated deaths
  • French Guiana - more than 7,800 cases
  • Paraguay - slightly more than 2,500 cases
  • Ecuador - almost 27,500 cases. The most affected provinces include Esmeraldas, Guyas, and Manabi.
  • Peru - cases are being reported from Piura and Tumbes regions; a chikungunya health emergency declared.

Advice

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
