Chikungunya virus is spreading in El Salvador; dengue fever continues

With 194 new cases reported last week, the total number of cases of chikungunya fever has reached 1,969. Cases were reported for the first time from 4 provinces, Quezaltepeque, Colón, Teotepeque, and Aguilares.

Meanwhile, there have been 21,876 reported cases of dengue fever nationwide.

Both dengue fever and chikungunya fever are transmitted by the same mosquito. Travellers to areas where these two viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue or chikungunya do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
