An outbreak of polio that caused 17 cases and one death in Hotan prefecture in Xinjiang began in July and has resulted in a large scale immunization campaign to stop the spread of the disease. The last confirmed case was reported in mid-September.

While the risk of exposure to polio virus in this area is low, all travellers are reminded to ensure that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
