Chinese police in Xinjiang region kill eight people after alleged terrorist attack

In China's northwest Xinjiang region, police have killed eight people after an alleged terrorist attack in which nine people attacked a police station in Yarkand county, near the old Silk Road city of Kashgar.

The Xinjiang region has had numerous incidents of civil unrest in recent years, which the the government often blames on the Muslim population and the separatist East Turkestan Islamic Movement.
