Chinese tourist dies in "forced shopping" incident in Hong Kong

A Chinese tourist has been killed after being beaten up during a “forced shopping tour.” Allegedly, the victim intervened in a fight between a tourist and the tour guide when the tourist refused to buy anything in a jewelry store in the Hung Hom commercial district.

China has made attempts to stop the “forced shopping” practice, but has had little success.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers should be aware that Chinese travel groups have complained about “forced shopping” where they are taken on shopping tours and then pressured by tour leaders into buying goods at certain stores. The tour operators receive commissions from these stores.

Travellers should be aware also of the tensions between Chinese mainlanders and those who live in Hong Kong.
