Cholera alert in Mexico and Central America

With the increase in reported cases of cholera in Hidalgo State (now 77 cases), 2 cases in Mexico City and 1 suspected case in Coahuila, authorities have remain concerned that the infection will spread more widely. Neighbouring countries such as Guatemala and Nicaragua have issued alerts to be on the lookout for any cholera cases. Travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
