Cholera case introduced into Martinique

A person who travelled from Haiti to Fort-de-France, Martinique, was found to have cholera. Even though the patient was hospitalized promptly, whether or not cholera will spread will depend a lot on the degree of sanitation that is present there. Although the risk for travellers is very low, travellers to this area can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Cholera.
