Cholera cases increasing in Hidalgo, Mexico

Cholera has claimed the life of 1 person and infected at least another 9 in the state of Hidalgo (7 cases) and Mexico City (2 cases). An additional 33 suspected cases are waiting for laboratory confirmation in Hidalgo. Ten patients are currently hospitalized. This outbreak follows a period of heavy rains and a subsequent shortage of clean drinking water. Travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
