Cholera comes back in Burundi

Cholera has reappeared in two areas of Burundi. In Bujumbura, there are reports of 40 cases during the past 3 weeks.

In Rugombo Cibitoke Province, along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there have been at least 12 reported cases. The most affected areas include Mparambo, Gabiro and Ruvyagira.

Travellers to these areas can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Cholera.
