Cholera epidemic death toll reaches 5,000

According to health authorities in Haiti, the death toll from the cholera outbreak has reached 5,000 with approximately 300,000 infected since October 2010. Around 2,985 Haitians are still hospitalized with cholera. Health officials believe the outbreak is likely to persist for some years.

Travellers to Haiti should be aware that the high risk of exposure to cholera is continuing. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid consuming unsafe food and water.
