Cholera Epidemic In Democratic Republic of the Congo May be Waning

There appears to be a continuing downward trend of cholera cases since the peak of the outbreak in October-November 2017. As of 25 March 2018, there were 497 new suspected cases with 10 deaths. The majority (70%) of new cases were reported from five provinces: Maidombé, North Kivu, Equateur, South Kivu and Kongo Central. Since the beginning of the outbreak January of 2017, a total of 62,815 suspected cases and 1,357 deaths have occurred.

Advice

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
